Officer catches, disarms burglar breaking into his personal boat

Investigators said a man picked the wrong boat to break into this weekend.

The boat’s owner – who is a police officer – stumbled upon the heist at the Pittsburg Marina. The officer didn’t let him get away without a fight, even after the burglar pulled a gun.

The burglary happened Sunday night at the Pittsburgh Marina. A Washington County police officer, who is a member of the SWAT team, told Channel 11 News he and two of his friends came face-to-face with the burglar and saw him searching through their belongings.

The robber allegedly grabbed the officer's gun off the boat and pointed it at the men before running toward the dock entrance. The police officer ran after him, knocked the gun out of his hand and tackled him to the ground.

As officers looked over the boat, they found a bag with items belonging to all three victims stuffed inside. Police also said the suspect, Robert Lyle, had tools on him including a pocket  knife, wire-cutting pliers and needle-nose pliers, which they said he used to commit the crime.

Lyle, is charged with burglary, robbery, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and other counts.
