PITTSBURGH — One small step for man, one giant new space museum for the Pittsburgh area. Space robotics company Astrobotic announced it is planning to open the state’s first museum dedicated solely to outer space.
The new museum is currently under construction and is set to open in summer 2022. Called the Moonshot Museum, it will feature a large window room through which visitors will be able to watch real lunar landers and rovers being built. Set for just a few blocks from Heinz Field, visitors will be able to take in interactive exhibits, education programs and other experiences while getting an up-close personal look at the $425 billion space industry.
The idea behind the new attraction is to “make space more accessible” through simulating real space missions and informing visitors about possible related career paths.

“Looking in through that clean room window, they’ll be able to see something that will leave this planet, and they’ll be changed forever. It’s about bringing the moon to Pittsburgh,” Mayor Bill Peduto said.
“Space is more than just rocket science. We want to provide the spark - that moment when an individual is inspired to pursue a space or tech career who may not have otherwise done so,” Astrobotic CEO John Thornton said. “For Astrobotic, success is as much about execution of its other-worldy missing and business as it is about engaging with and serving the communities it is a part of.”
