Serial burglar committed string of crimes in his own Pittsburgh neighborhood, police say

Joseph Ferderbar has been charged in other burglaries and home invasions over the years.

According to investigators, Ferderbar would prowl during the day, preying on his own neighbors. They claim he terrorized that community.

Five of the recently-hit homes police say Ferderbar hit in the middle of the day are all within walking distance of each other.

“He was hitting all the neighbors," Barker said. “The plan behind here, in Ross (Township), in Reserve (Township).”

In December, three home were burglarized a day apart. After a quick break around Christmas, police said Ferderbar was back at it in January.

Since his arrest, investigators said all burglaries and car break-ins in that neighborhood have stopped.

Ferderbar would steal entire safes from homes, police said, as well as thousands of dollars in cash, jewelry, prescriptions and passports.

A break in the case came from something they found outside of a home he allegedly hit -- a shoe-print in the snow. Officers compared the footprint from the snow with the tread on Ferderbar’s boot and it was a perfect match.

Ferderbar will be back in court next month.
