Police said Wade Taro was going door-to-door over the weekend, claiming to be collecting money for a company called Care Package Project that sends packages to soldiers overseas.
However, that company closed down in 2015.
"It looks like it was legitimate four years ago and was shut down, and they were using that name to solicit money off them," Greensburg police Capt. Robert Stafford said.
Taro didn't have a permit to be soliciting in the area, and didn't have any documentation for himself or the company.
"On top of that, the officer who handled the call is a veteran. So I'm sure it sparked his interest, too," Stafford said.
When officers tracked down Taro, he had about $100 in cash and checks from a handful of victims.
Taro allegedly told police there were six people working under this fraudulent organization. Some were in Murraysville the same night going door-to-door.
"Through the investigation this guy had warrants throughout the country on this type of situation, soliciting without a permit and scamming people for money," Stafford said.
