UPMC offering COVID-19 booster shots to people with compromised immune systems

PITTSBURGH — UPMC is now offering COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, but that third shot is only for certain people.

Gerry McLaughlin is the first to receive the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Pittsburgh.

“Last august, I was diagnosed with [burkett’s] lymphoma,” she explained.

As a cancer patient, McLaughlin qualified for UPMC’s COVID-19 study that looked at how well immunocompromised people respond to the COVID-19 vaccines.

“The two pfizer vaccines that I received in february and march did not produce any antibodies. I was non-reactive, that was the term they used.”

Dr. Grahan Snyder is the medical director of infection prevention and hospital epidemiology with UPMC.

He said the food and drug administration authorized use of COVID-19 vaccine booster shots only for people with compromised immune systems.

“Getting a third dose maybe that extra kick that the immune system needs to be prepared,” Dr. Snyder said.

Gerry and her husband are looking forward to a normal life when they can celebrate their 50th anniversary with family and friends.

“I think will still be very cautious. I wouldn’t immediately change our behavior. Because I still don’t know if I have any resistance to it. But at least I know it will be a severe,” she said.

The FDA also emphasized that other fully vaccinated people are “adequately protected,” and right now do not need an extra dose.

For people who are eligible to get the booster shot, you can call 844-UPMCVAC (844-876-2822) to schedule an appointment.
