Driver dies after vehicle crashes into Springdale pizza shop

A person died after a car crashed through the wall of a pizza shop in Springdale early Tuesday morning.

The Allegheny County Police Department said East Deer police tried to pull the Volvo over at 1:40 a.m. for a suspected DUI, but the driver fled. Officers lost sight of the car and ended their pursuit, but later saw the vehicle crashed through a wall of From Italy at the corner of Pittsburgh Street and Lincoln Avenue after it sheared through a telephone pole.

The crash caused a fire in the building that required firefighters to respond.

West Penn Power has replaced the fallen pole, but the building remains structurally unsound and at the moment, its future is unknown. As of Tuesday afternoon, the building was being held up by stabilizers to keep it from collapsing.

Abby Shimpeno, who lives across the street, described the impact as "a large shake. A boom. ... I came out to the porch and saw smoke and a big hole."

The driver was found dead in the vehicle, police said. The name of the driver was not immediately released.
