Deena Skwortz was driving her sons home from school when the pole crashed onto the windshield of the car they were in.

“Next thing she knows, the windshield was in her lap,” Chris Skwortz, Deena Skwortz’s husband, said. “That's my whole life right there. So scary, you know.”

Police said winds brought a tree down onto telephone wires, causing the pole on Boggs School Road to fall. The road remained closed Wednesday.

Deena Skwortz called her husband after the accident.

“All I heard was, ‘Chris, there's a lot of blood.’ And I’m, like, ‘Did you call 911?’ She said, ‘yes,’” Chris Skwortz told Channel 11’s Jennifer Tomazic.

Deena Skwortz was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, where she was placed in the ICU. It is unclear how severe her back injuries are, but a serious artery injury will not require surgery. She was released from ICU as of Wednesday.

Chris Skwortz is splitting his time between the hospital and home, where the couple’s sons, fifth- and tenth-graders, are recovering from facial injuries.

“Prayers and thoughts of friends and family really reached out,” Chris Skwortz said.
