WASHINGTON, Pa. — Nearly one week since fire destroyed a Main Street Washington building, residents are still looking for a new place to live -- and one woman is still looking for her pet.
Jen Hause lost every single item she owned, running outside that morning without her phone or contacts, only the clothes she wore to bed. But she continued to run back inside, not to grab items, but searching for her 7-month-old kitten.
“I went back up four different times. It was so chaotic. Everything was black. I went searching under the bed. I kept going up trying to find him. Smoke was so harsh on my lungs. I couldn’t see anything,” Hause said.

The first police officers on the scene couldn’t get through the back door, as the smoke and flames were too intense. All six residents were able to safely exit through the front door.
Hause said the community support was instant and overwhelming. It’s a small kindness that is going a long way for Hause, who still needs to find a new home and has returned every day to search for her pet.
“He’s seven months old. His name is Bob. I hope he got out. I’m an animal lover. Everything can be replaced,” Hause said.
