Wrong-way crash in Ft. Pitt Tunnel sends one to the hospital

PITTSBURGH — One person was injured in a wrong-way head-on crash in the Fort Pitt Tunnel early Sunday morning.

Pennsylvania State Police responded to the incident shortly before 3 a.m.

Police said a 2021 Toyota Camry driven by 21-year-old Maraye Ann Alexander, entered Interstate 376 from an unknown location and began traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.

The vehicle entered the tunnel still going the wrong direction, and hit a 2009 Hyundai Sonata driven by a 36-year-old man.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered multiple injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition.

Alexander was not hurt and refused transport, police said.

Both vehicles were towed and the CARS unit is investigating.

No further information was released.
