The annual observance takes place before dawn, followed by the West Indian Day Parade on Labor Day in New York, but organizers canceled the 2020 parade because of the coronavirus pandemic, CNN reported.
The injured include the child, his mother and three adult men, all of whom were taken to Kings County Hospital and are expected to recover, News 12 Brooklyn reported.
A law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation told CNN, “More than likely, the people shot were not the intended targets,” adding that the Crown Heights area has experienced heavy gang activity in recent months.
According to News 12 Brooklyn, police have two suspects in custody, but the investigation is active.
