CROWN POINT, Ind. — Fair officials in an Indiana county are not spitting mad, but they are sad that one of the festival’s most popular events won’t be held this year.
The Lake County Fair is nearly back to its pre-pandemic format, but the traditional bean-spitting contest has been shucked.
“Normally (the bean-spitting contest) is a big thing each year,” Arlene Marcinek, fair board secretary, told The Times of Northwest Indiana. “But this year it’s just not a good thing to have.”
Although some events were canceled due to crowding concerns, “Overall not much has changed since the fair is mostly outdoors," said Arlene Marcinek, fair board secretary. The fair runs through Aug. 15. https://t.co/vgspRsVfAX

The contest, which has been part of the fair since 1988, is sponsored by the Munster-based newspaper.
However, fair officials are pleased to reopen the annual event.
“Overall, not much has changed since the fair is mostly outdoors,” Marcinek told the Times. “We have plenty of hand sanitizer and hand-washing stations, and we are asking everyone to be courteous and to take precautions and wear masks if they feel the need to.”
Marcinek said she hopes the fair can return to full participation in 2022.
“We’re so happy to be back this year,” Marcinek told the Times.
