Officials: Florida inmate allegedly tried to attack deputies with broken toilet plunger

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida inmate is facing additional charges after he allegedly tried to attack deputies with a broken plunger on Thursday, officials say.

According to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, inmate Isaac Brevil, 35, got a hold of a plunger to unclog a toilet in a cell and then allegedly refused to give it back to deputies through the cell meal flap opening when ordered to. The incident happened at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.

FCSO Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release Brevil allegedly broke the wooden plunger stick, which made it sharp at each end.

“He then tried to stab our detention deputies with the broken pieces. Fortunately, he wasn’t able to penetrate the body armor the deputies were wearing, which saved them from serious injuries. During the struggle to regain control of this violent offender, one deputy’s elbow was fractured,” Staly said.

Brevil allegedly refused to give the broken wooden plunger back, and deputies used “clear-out chemicals” in order to get Brevil to comply, but it did not work, according to WFLA. Deputies then tried to get in the cell, but Brevil allegedly used his mattress to block the door. FCSO said that Brevil also blocked the meal flap opening with a blanket. Eventually, deputies used their tasers and were able to subdue Brevil.

According to WFLA, Brevil was in jail for fleeing a traffic stop.

““I commend our Detention deputies for how they handled a very dangerous situation and thank God the injuries were not any worse. We all pray for a speedy recovery for our Deputy,” Staly said.

Brevil is additionally facing four counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence, according to WFLA.
