PETERS TOWNSHIP, Pa.,None — Friends and family members are remembering a teenager involved in a car crash in Peters Township, Washington County, Saturday evening. Family members said she was brain dead and is being held on a ventilator so doctors can harvest organs from her body.
Overnight, the Allegheny County medical examiner's office confirmed that Adah "Adair" Porter, 18, was ruled dead from injuries she received in the crash along West Murray Avenue. Her grandmother said that Adair will be taken off of a ventilator Monday evening. Her grandmother said doctors will harvest 8 of her organs.
Porter's fiance told Channel 11 News that he was rear-ended by another driver at a red light. Four other cars were also damaged in the crash.
"She seriously could make me laugh like no other, and she would always give me advice about my boyfriend, because she was going through the same thing," said Porter's friend, Hanna Bioni. "There was no one like Adah. She was awesome."
Police said Thomas McNary, 54, left the scene, crossed Route 19 and struck another car on East Murray Avenue before trying to run off.
Peters Township police have not said whether any charges have been filed against McNary. Police said they believe the driver might have been having a medical emergency that caused him to lose control and continue driving.
"We believe he has a medical condition, we are going to have to file the appropriate paperwork to get copy of those records to determine his involvement criminally, as well as every other aspect of this is," said Peters Township Police Chief Harry Fruecht.
Frick said McNary had to be going fast given the damage to the cars.
"It could be a head injury, it could be a seizure, could be diabetic. Until you get the records, you don't know," said Fruecht. "You have to file and get subpoenas to get the records."
Channel 11 was unable to get in touch with McNary, but reporter Dave Bondy did speak to McNary's ex-wife. "He is a good man, has a father of two children, he has two kids of his own. I haven't spoken to him, but I am sure he is dealing with his grief and sorrow," she said.
Fruecht said the investigation could take several weeks. He also said that even if McNary had a medical condition that he could still be charged with a crime.
