Tristan Jarry inks new 3-year deal with Penguins, signaling end of Matt Murray’s tenure

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed goaltender Tristan Jarry to a three-year contract.

Executive Vice President and General Manager Jim Rutherford announced the contract, which will run through the 2022-23 season and carries an average annual value of $3.5 million.

“Tristan is coming off of an All-Star season and has demonstrated the ability to be a regular starter for us,” Rutherford said in a news release. “He is a fundamentally sound young goaltender who we believe is a great asset for the Penguins.”

Jarry, 25, enjoyed a career year in 2019-20 with Pittsburgh, leading to his first career NHL All-Star Game selection. He set career highs across the board in games played (33), wins (20), goals-against average (2.43), save percentage (92.1) and shutouts (3). Jarry’s goals-against average (9th) and save percentage (8th) both ranked in the top-10 in the NHL.

The Pittsburgh goaltender’s career year included setting the franchise shutout record at 177:15 minutes between Nov. 29-Dec. 10, which included back-to-back shutouts against St. Louis (Dec. 4) and Arizona (Dec. 6). Two games later, he became just the second goaltender in Penguins history to record three shutouts in four appearances (Marc-Andre Fleury; Oct. 25-Nov. 1, 2014).

Jarry made his NHL playoff debut in game four of the Penguins' qualifying round against Montreal on Aug. 7, saving 20 of 21 shots in Pittsburgh’s 2-0 loss.

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound goaltender has played 62 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, accumulating a 34-20-4 record with a 2.61 goals-against average, 91.2 save percentage and five shutouts. During his rookie season with Pittsburgh in 2017-18, Jarry led all rookies with 14 wins, while his two shutouts led the team.

Before the 2019-20 season, Jarry split the first four seasons of his professional career between Pittsburgh and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. The goaltender had success with WBS in 141 games from 2015-19, going 77-48-15 with a 2.55 GAA, 91.5 save percentage and nine shutouts. Jarry was named an AHL All Star in 2017, the same season he paired with Casey DeSmith to win the Harry “Hap” Holmes Award for the team that surrenders the fewest goals in the year.

Jarry was drafted by the Penguins in the second round (44th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. Before his professional career, the Surrey, BC native played four seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. Jarry went 93-49-10 in 159 games for the Oil Kings from 2011-15, and led his team to a Memorial Cup title in 2014.

As for fellow goalie Matt Murray, this new deal for Jarry most likely signals the end of Murray’s tenure in Pittsburgh. There have been rumors circulating that the Penguins have been attempting to move him this summer.
