Saturday storms cause mass damage, power outages across several local counties

PITTSBURGH — High winds gusts are still a concern throughout the early evening. Gusty winds coupled with the saturated ground from rain could still uproot trees and create power issues. Be alert.

A lingering shower will end following a cold front that moves through this evening. Temperatures will tumble tonight, with lows around the freezing mark.

Sunday will be much nicer. Clouds will clear as the sun comes up Sunday, it will be a cold start, but highs will reach the low 50s by the afternoon.

Are you still without power? Duquesne Light Company released a statement saying they will have 100 crews working overnight to help restore power to all of their customers.

PennDOT released an updated list of road restrictions throughout the area as a result of storm damage at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. The restrictions are:

Allegheny County

  • Harrison Road (Route 2023) between Lovedale Road and Liberty Way in Lincoln Borough
  • West Hardies Road (Route 4067) at Wickline Road in Hampton Township
  • North Branch Road (Route 3108) near Whittengale Road in North Fayette Township

Beaver County

  • Tuscarawas Road (Route 4028) between Center Drive and Laurel Drive in Brighton Township
  • Route 18 between Montgomery Dam Road and Mowery Road in Potter Township
  • Mellon Road (Route 1018) between Powell Road and Ridge Road in New Sewickley Township
  • Gringo Independence Road (Route 3036) between Davidson Lane and Boake Drive in Hopewell Township
  • Route 30 between Route 168 and Route 151 in Greene Township
  • Shippingport Hill Road (Route 3016) between Route 18 in Raccoon Township and Route 168 in Shippingport Borough

Lawrence County

  • Route 317 between Main Street and Smalls Ferry Road in North Beaver Township

A HIGH WIND WARNING has been issued for parts of Fayette, Westmoreland and Indiana counties. The warning is expected to be in place through 2 a.m.

PennDOT has released a list of more road closures affecting counties in Western Pennsylvania. Roads closed due to wind damage in Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties are:

Allegheny County

The National Weather Service reported that winds of 55 mph were recorded in Moon Township on Saturday.

Strong winds brought trees and poles down all throughout western Pennsylvania on Saturday. In response, PennDOT has had to close several state routes in local counties.

The closures are as follows:

Armstrong County:

  • State Route 2007 from the intersection of US 422 – Benjamin Franklin Highway to the intersection of Lauster Road, Red Mill Road in Kittanning Township
  • State Route 2015 – Greenfield Drive/Campbell Run Road/Brick Church Road from the intersection of Garrett Road to Boarts Road, Kerr Road in Burrell Township.
  • PA 839 from the intersection of Upper Mudlic Road to McWilliams Road in Redbank Township.

Butler County

  • State Route 3002 Whitestown Road between the intersections of State Route 68 and Meridian Road in Butler Township.
  • State Route 3007 Meridian Road between the intersections of Whitestown Road and Buttercup Road in Butler Township.
  • State Route 3003 Plank Road between the intersections of Decatur Road and Dutchtown Village Road in Butler Township.
  • PA 228 eastbound and westbound between the intersections of Saxonburg Boulevard, Victory Road and the connection for PA 228 E to 228 W, Saxonburg Boulevard-Glade Mill Road in Clinton Township.
  • State Route 3029 Dick Road between the intersections of Boy Scout Road and Whitestown Road in Connoquenessing Township.

Clarion County:

  • State Route 3014 Shannon Tipple Road between the intersection of Cherry Run Church Road/Mounty Airy Road in Toby Township and PA 68 in Piney Township.

Indiana County:

  • State Route 3035 Main Street/Old Route 119 between the intersection of Two Lick Drive and Spring Road in Center Township.
  • State Route 4006 Ambrose Road/Brady Road/Five Points Road between the intersection of Donahue Road and Cummings Road in Washington Township.

ORIGINAL STORY:

High winds coupled with saturated ground from rain could uproot trees and create power issues. Gusts will top 55 mph in many areas. Power outages are possible across the Channel 11 Viewing area by tonight.

Please have extra batteries and a plan in place for severe storms. It will be a lot calmer Sunday with a bit of a breeze and highs in the 50s.
