Next week marks the ‘dead of winter’ for Pittsburgh area

PITTSBURGH — Hey, summer lovers! The worst of winter will be over after next week. Well, at least climatologically.

Next week marks the “dead of winter” for our area, with the high temperature averaging only 35 degrees from Jan. 10 through Jan. 17. That’s the coldest stretch of high temperatures on the books for the entire year.

And you can see most of our all-time coldest temperatures have happened during the third week of January, with the lowest temperatures bottoming out at nearly 20 degrees below zero.

Now, that’s not to say that the coldest week of winter every year is the week of Jan. 10, but beginning about the 18th of the month, the “normal” high and low temperatures start to creep back up. By the time we get to the official end of winter, about March 21, the average high temperature is 51 degrees.
