Severe weather moves across portion of Channel 11 News viewing area

PITTSBURGH — Showers and thunderstorms developed across the region Sunday, bringing the chance for strong downpours and gusty winds.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties has been canceled.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Mercer and Venango counties, but has since expired.

Severe Weather Team 11 Meteorologist Kevin Benson said there will be some breaks in the rain over the course of the day. The high temperature will be about 77 degrees, accompanied by a mix of clouds and sun.

“Thunderstorms will occur at times today, along with rain showers. Any storm may include flooding downpours and damaging wind, along with thunder and lightning,” Benson said.

Benson emphasized that local residents should be aware of the dangers of flash flooding, which is the number one cause of weather-related deaths in western Pennsylvania.

“Our mountains and valleys can quickly funnel water into fast moving streams,” he said. “As little as six inches of water can cause tires to lose traction and begin to slide. Twelve inches of water can float many cars. Two feet of rushing water will carry off pick-up trucks, SUV's and most other vehicles.”
