Sinkhole opens up underneath parked car in Spring Hill

PITTSBURGH — Crews are working to fix a sinkhole that opened up right in the middle of a Pittsburgh street Monday afternoon, nearly swallowing a parked car.

Department of Public Works barriers are set up around the car in the 1500 block of Homer Street.

“I came home. My boss said, ‘Yeah, that old excuse my car fell into a sinkhole. Sure,’” said the car’s owner Christ Stygar.

A spokesperson with Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority told Channel 11 that there was a water main break underneath the street on a 6-inch line. The water from the break caused the road to fall in.

“I almost wish it would have fallen all the way in at this point. It’s half in, half out. I hope they can get it out,” Stygar said.

PWSA plans to have the main fixed by late Monday night, and once that’s complete, they’ll determine the plan for repairing the road.
