21 Fires Lit Near WVU To Mark Bin Laden's Death

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.,None — Authorities said students and others celebrating the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden started 21 couch, mattress and trash bin fires in Morgantown.

Investigators are studying photographs and video, and they expect to file charges.

Fire Capt. Ken Tennant said the city couldn't have predicted the celebrations that broke out Sunday night and Monday morning after President Barack Obama announced bin Laden's death.

Tennant said no one was seriously injured and there are no reports of major property damage, but the fires did damage pavement.

He said abandoned vehicles that clogged streets made it tough for firefighters to respond, and the fires could have gotten out of control.

Ten off-duty firefighters were summoned to help. Morgantown police didn't comment on arrests.

West Virginia University said it's cooperating with authorities.
