Substitute teachers to play key role in North Allegheny School District

MCCANDLESS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The North Allegheny School District has a substitute staffing surplus.

However, with the start of the school year just days away and the pandemic constantly evolving, the district is still looking to secure more people.

“We are currently recruiting and hiring additional subs. We know that this is going to be a year like no other and we need to be prepared for whatever may happen,” said Melissa Friez, North Allegheny Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools.

North Allegheny’s first day for students is September 8, and things will look and feel a bit different.

There are currently two options for a return to school: in-person/hybrid or the NA Cyber Academy.

NA is looking to place and train subs in both settings.

“Our substitutes will receive PPE so just like the rest of our staff they’ll receive a mask before starting back to school. We’ll make sure that they’ll do health screenings prior to coming to school in the morning,” Friez said.

Substitute teachers will also be required to complete a temperature check and report any COVID-related symptoms. If they have the smallest inkling something is wrong, they must stay home.

District leaders are anticipating a constantly evolving experience.

“It’s not going to be a typical year for anybody. So, we’re looking for people that are flexible and willing to come and work with students and be very transparent with us about what their needs are,” Friez said.
