Highmark Health to delay return to office due to Delta variant

PITTSBURGH — Highmark Health is delaying for several weeks the long-anticipated return to the office for many of its employees.

The Pittsburgh-based health insurer had long planned and made a significant investment in renovating workspaces and work teams during the Covid-19 pandemic with an eye toward a hybrid work schedule starting after Labor Day. Work spaces had been redesigned, especially at its Fifth Avenue headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh, and each employees’ job had been reviewed as to the optimal hybrid working schedule.

But the rise of the Delta variant has scrambled the plans of many employers. It has led to many delays in the return to the office, as well as moves by some employers — including Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network — to push for all of its employees to be vaccinated to slow down the spread of the virus.
