PNC Championship scores highest ratings in 20 years

PITTSBURGH — The two-day event drew its highest ratings since 2001 — 2.34 million viewers on Saturday and 2.24 million on Sunday, NBC said. Or, as Hot Mic, Golf.com’s weekly media column put it, a close to 50% increase over 2020. The Sunday time slot coincided with a slate of NFL games, including the Pittsburgh Steelers pulling off a 19-13 come-from-behind win over the Tennessee Titans.

The big attraction was the golfing duo who finished second: Tiger Woods and his 12-year-old son, Charlie. Hot Mic dubbed it “the Tiger Effect.” It was the first competition for Tiger Woods since a devastating car crash in February that caused severe injuries to his right leg and had the golf legend hospitalized for three months.

The PNC Championship 2020 was the last time he played professionally. It was also the tournament where fans of the sport got their first look at Charlie Woods in action.

For Pittsburgh-based PNC (NYSE: PNC) this was its first major sponsorship since converting BBVA USA Bancshares’ branches two months ago, capping the $11.6 billion acquisition that positioned PNC as the nation’s fifth-largest bank.
