Jerome Bettis Hosts Children's Asthma Sports Camp At Heinz Field

PITTSBURGH,None — Sixty children got the chance to participate in a special camp designed just for them by a former Pittsburgh Steeler.

The second annual Jerome Bettis Asthma and Sports Camps was held Wednesday and Thursday at Heinz Field.

The camp is focused on children with asthma and teaches them more about the condition and ways to stay physically active safely.

"The main message is that, just because you have asthma doesn't mean you can't play sports. We spend time playing sports, educating the kids and teaching them about asthma," said Bettis.

Jerome was diagnosed with asthma at age 14.

The American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation sponsored the free camp.

The Bettis Asthma Camp featured special visits from sports celebrities including free agent Deshea Townsend, retired Steeler defensive back Mike Logan and the Pittsburgh Passion women's football team.
