1 person arrested after stolen car crashes into, knocks over trailer

PITTSBURGH — On Monday night, a driver in a stolen car crashed into a construction trailer before hitting another car, going through a fence and narrowly missing a home in Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar.

“We were saying we were expecting something to happen,” Alexis Russell, owner of Russell General Contracting, told Channel 11 News. “They fly up and down this road.”

Russell says she even went to the mayor and the city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, worried someone would be killed on Apple Street because of the excessive speeding. Her construction company is restoring a historic building on Apple Street that is home to the National Negro Opera Company.

“We’d like to restore this building and not die in the process.”

Her construction trailer was flipped on its side and badly damaged in the crash. Siding was sheared off and a large corner was ripped off.

“They were going really, really fast,” Russell tells Channel 11.

The car didn’t stop there. After the stolen car careened into the construction trailer, it drove into another car, through a neighbor’s fence and almost into a house. Shattered glass, metal pieces and car parts littered the road and sidewalk on Tuesday. The trailer was so heavy that when it flipped, it put two big indentations in the pavement. If her crews were inside the trailer at the time, Russell says this would have had a very different ending.

“This would have been catastrophic,” Russell added. “It was actually on its side. They had to have the crane up and lift it back up to put it upright.”

Russell says police did make an arrest, but she’s frustrated about speeding and doesn’t know where else to turn before a life is lost if something like this happens again.

“There’s no need to go 60 mph, it’s not necessary,” Russell added. “You’ll get there, I promise. Just give us a break and please slow down.”
