30 years later, memorial service remembers missing 8-year-old girl

SAXONBURG, Pa. — A memorial service held Sunday in Saxonburg marked 30 years since Cherrie Mahan went missing after getting off a school bus near her Winfield Township, Butler County, home.

Cherrie, who was 8 years old at the time of her disappearance, remains in the thoughts of family members and investigators.

"There's not ever one day that I don't think about Cherrie," said Janice McKinney, Cherrie's mother.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children released an age-progression photo of what Cherrie could look like today at the age of 38.

A bright blue 1976 Dodge van with a mural of a mountain and a skier may have been involved in her disappearance.

"I just feel that there is somebody out there that does know, and would ease our family's hearts if they just came forth and told us what happened," said McKinney.

Sunday's memorial service was held at the Saxonburg Memorial Church.

Police said the case is still an open investigation.
