BUTLER, Pa. — Interstate 79 was shut down just north of Zelienople after a serious accident near mile marker 90.
The accident happened at approximately 2:40 p.m. and caused a traffic mess for hours.
Police said a tractor trailer struck two vehicles and forced one into a semi-truck.
Traffic on Interstate 79 and Route 19, where drivers were rerouted, was backed up for about a mile.
Drivers told reporter Pamela Osborne they were at a standstill for an hour or longer.
One person was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital via medical helicopter. Another person was flown to Allegheny General Hospital.
The victims' names and conditions have not been released.
It took state police nearly five hours to clear the scene.
