HOMEWOOD, Pa. — A 92-year-old jitney driver was shot several times in Homewood while trying to do his job Wednesday.
Chopper 11 flew over the scene of the shooting on Bennett Street Wednesday afternoon. Since then, investigators have tracked down the alleged shooter.
Jason Haddock, 25, was arrested shortly after the shooting. He is facing criminal attempted homicide charges.
Police said a man sitting next to the driver was the intended target.
Cornelius Swinton was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with gunshot wounds to the neck and upper body. Authorities said although Swinton was shot several times, he kept driving until he collapsed when he got near Frankstown Avenue.
According to the criminal complaint, a passenger in the car saw a white car pass and pull out a weapon to shoot them.
Police said Haddock admitted to firing the gun and said he was retaliating for a recent shooting at his family’s home.
Jackie Allen said she was at Bible study, less than a block away from the shooting, when police told her what happened.
“Right in the middle of Bible study the detective came in and informed us there was a shooting,” Allen said. “(Police) wanted to know if our cameras were working because someone informed them that the shooter drove by the church.”
Neighbors told Channel 11 News that Swinton had worked as a jitney driver for decades without any trouble. He has lived along ever since his wife was put in a nursing home several years ago.
