Beaver County mother begs drivers to slow down on Route 51

BEAVER COUNTY, Pa. — A local mom is begging people to slow down on a busy Beaver County road.

She said a series have crashes have happened on Route 51 in Monaca and it’s only a matter of time before someone in her family gets hurt.

Amber Smith has been keeping track of incidents. She has photos of crashes that go back years.

Her father has owned the house along Route 51 for more than a decade. Her kids’ bus stop is in his driveway. It’s just a few feet wide and connects to the busy road.

“As you can see [...] they don’t slow down,” Smith said.

The intersection, which is just feet from the home, has been a hotspot for crashes. One happened just a few days ago, involving a turned over truck.

“A vehicle flipped over and landed so many feet toward here. It’s pretty scary,” she said.

Another involved a school bus. It crashed into the neighbor’s yard.

The speed limit is 35 miles per hour, but it goes from two lanes to four. Amber calls the spot a “drag strip.”

“As you can see, even with a camera out here, they don’t slow down,” she said.

She’d like to see something done whether it’s increased signage, police patrols or something else.

11 News reached out to Monaca Borough and Monaca Police to find out if there is anything they can do. We haven’t heard back.
