Drunk driver who caused horrific crash on McKees Rocks Bridge pleads guilty

PITTSBURGH — The man who had been accused of driving drunk when he caused a deadly crash on the McKees Rocks Bridge appeared in court for a plea hearing Thursday.

Christopher Vuckovich, 41, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, ranging from DUI to homicide by vehicle.

In exchange, prosecutors agreed to waive the mandatory minimum sentence for the homicide by vehicle offense, essentially reducing the number of years Vuckovich would have otherwise been legally required to serve behind bars.

Vuckovich had been under the influence when he caused a horrific crash involving five vehicles and nine people in February of 2019. Three individuals were left in critical condition and one victim, Terry Hamilton, died from her injuries nearly six weeks later.

Vuckovich had no comment when approached by Channel 11 after the hearing, however his defense attorney, Milton Raiford, spoke with us, calling the outcome “fair.”

“My client admitted his culpability and now the guidelines under which he is to be sentenced more accurately line up with what I believe the consequences should be for his actions,” Raiford told us.

We asked if his client felt remorse.

“He’s been a regular attendee at my church. There’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t pray,” Raiford said. “We teach repentance, we teach humility, and we preach this ‘confessions of your sins, so that they may be forgiven.’”

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April.
