More electric buses are on the way to service Pittsburgh-area riders following a multi-million-dollar grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
On Monday, the EPA awarded the Allegheny County Health Department a $10 million grant, which officials said will be used to replace four diesel-powered, 40-foot buses that Pittsburgh Regional Transit uses to service the Mon Valley area. By 2026, PRT will use some of this funding to purchase four electric battery-powered and zero-emission vehicles. The grant funding also will be used to install two electric vehicle charging stations at the garage that these buses end up getting assigned to after purchase.
PRT services 23 bus routes in the Mon Valley, which transport over 52,000 riders on an average weekday.
