First responders explain how they worked together to rescue people involved in Liberty Tunnel crash

PITTSBURGH — Traffic was significantly backed up after a driver in a truck hit into several vehicles inside the tunnel, before coming to a stop outside of the tunnel.

Nine vehicles were involved in the crash in total, and the tunnels were closed for hours.

The driver of that truck was taken to the hospital and critical condition and six others were also hurt but will be ok.

EMS crews had to rescue several people from their cars

PennDOT tunnel manager Paul Manyisha said their crews were ready to help at a moment’s notice.

“Our tunnel maintainers are trained first responders, so they’ve seen multiple and different incidents that happen from time to time,” Manyisha said.

He’s thankful for the efficiency for each and every crew that responded.

“I’m very grateful for the coordinated effort between police, fire, EMS and our tunnel. It really is a coordinated effort between our entities to, not only keep the drivers safe, but our staff safe,” he added.
