PITTSBURGH — Jonas Chaney is this year’s Pittsburgh Black Media Federation Legacy Award winner.
“It makes me feel old. I look at the term legacy and I wonder wow, have I been around that long,” Chaney said.
Chaney is one of several journalists honored for his work.
He worked as a sports reporter for Channel 11 in the mid-1980s.
Now, he’s being honored for producing two long-time running TV shows — “Talking Pittsburgh” and “Impact.”
The public affairs shows highlighted the plight of the Black community in Pittsburgh on Channel 11.
“It’s been a real privilege to work in the Pittsburgh community and earn their respect. I think that’s important,” Chaney said.
Chaney retired from WPXI right before the pandemic. He said he is still volunteering and working in the community, although he moves a little slower now.
He told us he really misses the people at Channel 11.
“The on-air personalities, the loyalty, and the pizza dinners,” he said. “There was always food. Something was wrong or whatever and they always ordered pizza.”
