Grandmother of 6-year-old boy hit by car in Glen Hazel working to keep other kids safe

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — The grandmother of a 6-year-old boy struck by a car and killed last month is working to make sure other children are safe as the school year begins.

Dashieba Wilder’s grandson, Jamel Auston, was riding his bicycle in front of his Glen Hazel home when he was struck.

This week, Wilder bought a crossing guard vest and drove from her home on the North Side to what would have been her grandson’s bus stop.

“I’m out here by myself,” Wilder said. “Thank you for everybody who got me coffee. I appreciate that. Anyone

wants to donate a rain jacket, I was out here in the rain on the first day of school. I was out here safely making sure the kids got safely to school. Kindergarten started today.”

Video shot by a passerby has been viewed thousands of times. Drivers are heard offering condolences for her loss.

“Now I don’t have my baby and that’s a lot for me,” Wilder said. “Now we are out here looking for justice.”

Pittsburgh Police said they still are investigating Auston’s death. The driver has been identified but no charges have been filed.

“This is the hard part, getting justice for Jamel. Who is going to stand out here with me,” Wilder said. “That’s all I’m asking.”

She also is asking for traffic signs, a speed bump—anything to prevent another family from experiencing a tragedy.

“Slow down. Be careful,” Wilder said. “If there ain’t going to be no sign, I’m their sign. All I’m asking them is to respect the vest.”
