PITTSBURGH — More than 700 members of UPMC Health Plan have been alerted after protected health information was sent to an incorrect email address.
According to a release, a data file containing the information was intended to be sent to a physician's office in Lawrence County, but was instead sent to the wrong address. UPMC Health Plan alerted 722 of its members who utilize that practice.

The breach was discovered June 4. An investigation determined that names, member ID numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, name of the primary care physician's office and insurance plan types were disclosed.
Social Security numbers and medical history information were not compromised, the release stated.
"We apologize for any anxiety or inconvenience that this incident may cause our members," said William Gedman, chief compliance officer of the UPMC Insurance Services Division. "Based on our ongoing investigation, we will make all changes necessary to further enhance our already stringent privacy protections."
According to UPMC Health Plan, the recipient of the email was contacted and staff was retrained on email procedures.
