Labor, lawmakers want infrastructure contractors to hire locally

With billions of dollars of state and federal funding flowing to Pennsylvania in the next several years, labor officials and legislators on both sides of the aisle want to make sure local workers will be hired to fix bridges, repair roads and other infrastructure work.

Representatives from the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, the Painters and Allied Trades International Union and two state legislators, state Rep. Nick Pisciottano, D-Pittsburgh, and state Sen. Devin Robinson, R-Allegheny County, made that point during a news conference Thursday afternoon held at the union’s Carnegie training facility.

“This conversation needs to be had. We’re still in front of the work that is going to be coming as part of the infrastructure bill here in Pennsylvania,” said Angela Ferritto, president of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO. “Pennsylvania has an opportunity right now to get it right. This state needs to lean into its local union workforce.”
