Main Street in Sharpsburg reopens after crash sends 1 person to hospital

SHARPSBURG, Pa. — It was a busy afternoon for first responders as they worked to clean up a crash on Main Street in Sharpsburg.

“We thought someone wrecked into our parking lot. It was that loud,” said Robert Churchel Jr.

A bang sent Churchel running to see what was happening outside the business where he works.

“We immediately saw the pole down and the car,” Churchel said.

The car was lying on its side with two people inside screaming for help, and that’s when Churchel and other drivers stepped in to help.

“The tow truck drivers actually took wood to brace the car up. One gave the woman a jacket to cover herself, and we smashed the back window with a hammer,” Churchel said.

Not long after, first responders got to the crash and proceeded to cut and rip half the roof off to get the woman out. The driver of the car was able to get out on his own, according to Churchel.

“It seems people tend to take it a little too fast through here from time to time, but we don’t have any explanation for why it happened,” Churchel said.

The road was shut down for a few hours as Duquesne Light restored power to an area community center that lost power as a result of the crash.

As for the people inside the car, a fire department spokesperson said the woman was transported to the hospital to get checked out.
