Man escapes ambulance, jumps off Apollo Bridge

APOLLO, Pa. (AP) — A man escaped from an ambulance Sunday afternoon and jumped off the Apollo Bridge into the Kiskiminetas River.

According to Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE, the unidentified man jumped off the bridge and into the river at about noon Sunday.

State police Lt. Tom Dubovi said an ambulance was taking the man for a mental health evaluation when he somehow escaped and ran onto the bridge.

Police shut down the bridge but the man jumped into the river about 55 feet below, and members of the Armstrong County boat rescue team picked him up downstream. He was unconscious but breathing, and later regained consciousness.

The man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. Authorities said his injuries are not life-threatening.
