PITTSBURGH — Steelers General Manager Omar Khan had a lot to discuss with reporters this afternoon on the South Side.
The media met with the general manager for the first time since the team named its initial 53-man roster.
Khan talked about the 4 quarterbacks and the current health of the group, but was asked multiple times about where things stand with Joey Porter Jr.‘s contract negotiations.
The cornerback was activated off the physically unable to perform list yesterday evening. He’s dealt with a back injury throughout all of training camp.
Negotiations between Porter Jr. and the Steelers have appeared to stall. Just last week, Head Coach Mike McCarthy admitted they’re at an impasse with Porter Jr.
Channel 11 asked Khan if he anticipates getting the deal done by Week 1.
Knowing the longstanding policy the team has of not negotiating in season.
“Like any other player – We won’t go – We won’t talk publicly about the negotiations per se, but you know, Joey. Joey knows how we feel about him, and I still hope Joey, you know, finishes his career here,” Khan said.
Sports Director Jenna Harner: Do you anticipate a deal potentially getting done by the start of the season, knowing the policy you have?
“Yeah, we won’t. First off, our policy is going to remain in place, but we, you know, I’m not going to talk about negotiations,” Khan said.
Khan was asked if he anticipates Porter Jr practicing with the team now that he’s off the PUP list.
He said he expects anyone who is healthy and available to practice.
