PITTSBURGH — A biology professor at the Community College of Allegheny County has achieved the Guinness World Record as the longest-career science instructor (male).
College faculty and administrators surprised Francis Maxin with news of the designation during CCAC’s “All College Day” fall semester launch program.
At the time of the official Guinness World Records designation in May, Maxin had served 59 years and 245 days at CCAC’s Main Campus in Pittsburgh. He has been employed as a biology instructor at the college since September 1966 and remains a full-time faculty member entering his 233rd semester of teaching this fall.
A committee composed of CCAC faculty and administrators secretly gathered research for the Guinness World Records submission as part of the institution’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
The community college opened in September 1966 with 75 original teaching faculty members, including 59 full-time and 16 part-time instructors. Today, CCAC operates four campuses and three centers across the Pittsburgh region.
Maxin graduated from Gannon University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He later earned a Master of Science in Biology from Duquesne University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh.
During his tenure at the college, Maxin served as chair of the biology department for approximately 20 years. He continues to teach microbiology at CCAC.
Maxin authored the college textbook “Venereal Disease and Control” and worked as a textbook editor for nearly two decades. He has also been a member of the American Society for Microbiology for 60 years.
In 2022, Maxin received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence award for his service at the college.
