Pittsburgh Steelers draft picks join Big Brothers, Big Sisters to run drills with kids

PITTSBURGH — Some local children got to spend time with their new mentors on Saturday who also happen to be the latest additions to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kids on the waitlist for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh had the chance to run drills with the Steelers’ new draft picks.

The kids met with some of the new players at Shadyside Academy on Saturday.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters builds one-to-one mentoring relationships between children and guiding mentors across the country. Kids who are on the waiting list have not been paired up with their mentors yet. Right now, more than 150 kids are on the waitlist.

The event acts as a way to get the kids excited and to help get the new players involved in the city.

“It’s a big part of what we do is to help kids to experience something they wouldn’t have otherwise. The Steelers have been an amazing partner with us. This is the second year in a row they’ve brought their draft picks out to meet with the kids,” said Becky Flaherty, CEO of Big Brothers, Big Sisters Greater Pittsburgh.

The event is also designed to bring in new volunteers to help work with kids. It has already brought 130 volunteers to the organization.
