PITTSBURGH — Police in Pittsburgh will begin issuing citations this Thursday, Oct. 1, to drivers operating vehicles in dedicated bus lanes on Forbes and Fifth avenues in Oakland.
Motorists caught driving in the restricted lanes will face a $25 fine along with approximately $175 in associated fees.
The designated enforcement zone spans between Bellefield and Craft avenues, where contractors finished installing the bus lanes last month.
Port Authority Police have issued verbal warnings to drivers in the area prior to issuing formal citations.
The bus lanes are reserved strictly for public transit vehicles and emergency responders. Private cars and bicycles cannot enter, stop or park in the designated lanes, even for quick passenger drop-offs, pickups or deliveries. Transit officials advise drivers to use side streets or designated loading zones for drop-offs and deliveries.
Drivers are permitted to enter the bus lanes to execute right turns in areas where the red lane markings are dashed. Drivers must use turn signals before merging into the dashed section and check that no transit vehicles are approaching, as drivers are prohibited from pulling in front of a bus.
