PITTSBURGH — Channel 11 has learned 18-year-old Omar McCord Jr. was killed in Highland Park either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. McCord’s grandmother tells Channel 11 that her grandson is from Garfield and had just graduated in May. She came to the spot where her grandson died and wants to know why someone would shoot and kill him, why he was in Highland Park, and what happened before the trigger was pulled.
Neighbors say they woke up to the horror of a young man found lifeless, lying on the pavement in the middle of an alley at the intersection of Ionic and Millbrae Way in Highland Park. Residents say they haven’t seen crime on this street in decades.
Three different people tell Channel 11 they heard between six and eight gunshots around 11 p.m., and they knew the shots fired were not fireworks.
Pittsburgh Public Schools released the following statement:
“We are sorry to learn of the loss of a former Pittsburgh Milliones student. Student and employee support services have been coordinated for the school to support any one who needs them.”
Police say the cause of death will be released by the medical examiner.
