MONROEVILLE, Pa. — A volunteer firefighter has been charged with causing a 2025 crash in Monroeville that left one person dead.
On Oct. 21, 2025, shortly before 6:30 p.m., a blue Chevrolet Malibu collided with a gray Nissan Quest at the intersection of Haymaker and McGinley roads.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Broderick Balanti, 29, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Nissan, Leroy Hart, 88, was also taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries on Nov. 16.
Detectives later determined that Balanti was traveling north on Haymaker Road, while Hart was traveling south. Police said Hart attempted to make a left turn onto McGinley Road when he was struck by Balanti’s vehicle.
According to police, Balanti was a volunteer firefighter and was responding to a call in his personal vehicle without lights and sirens. Technology from his vehicle showed he was driving 71 miles per hour one second prior to the crash.
Allegheny County Police said after consulting with the district attorney’s office, Balanti is facing multiple charges including homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless driving.
