Popular Pittsburgh sandwich shop closes after 35 years

PITTSBURGH — Droves of long-time customers stopped by a popular downtown sandwich shop on Friday to place their last orders.

After 35 years on Liberty Avenue, Sammy’s Famous Corned Beef will be closing its doors for good.

“Thank you for the service you’ve provided over the years and wish you the best with whatever you do next,” said customer Daren DeArmit, who for years, has reunited with his siblings at the eatery.

For many, the shop provides a sense of nostalgia.

Customer Lisa Peoples recalls ordering sandwiches there with her aunt, who has since passed away.

“This is one of the places we used to come all of the time, so I’m like, we gotta come down and pay tribute, for Sammy and for her, this is one of our favorites.”

Owner Sammy Firman was too busy with orders to comment on Friday, but previously told Channel 11 he made the choice as the lease was coming to an end, and he decided it was time to retire rather than seek a renewal.

“We had a great run,” he said. “We’re going out on a good note.”
