Sue Murray Pool reopens after community members rally behind it

PITTSBURGH — Some families said they are so happy to see the pool back open and feel safer with new security around.

“I’m so glad they got the swimming pool open for all these kids,” said parent Tammy Weaver.

A mom is thrilled the Sue Murray pool in the Northside is open once again for her family.

The community fought to have the pool up and running this summer after the city at first said it wouldn’t open because of safety concerns and a lifeguard shortage.

But people at the pool say they feel safe there.

“As an adult we are always here with our children and we never had a problem — we came here all last year,” said Weaver.

To ensure safety, city officials said a security guard will be at the pool from open to close. They’re also planning to have more officers patrol in Allegheny Commons East Park.

“I think that’s good because the teenagers tend to get in arguments and stuff like that, but I think it’s a great move having the pool open,” said Weaver.

Parents said it’s important to have the pool available for the kids.

“You want them to have something to do and this isn’t like a rich neighborhood and a lot of parents can’t drive and stuff — it’s walking distance for communities to swim here,” said Weaver.

The pool won’t be open on Saturdays until July 9.
