ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A lot of people in Ross Township are upset that it’s costing more for trash pickup. Channel 11 spoke with township leaders on what’s causing that increase.
“I’m not happy about that at all,” said Sarah Suehr, Ross Township resident.
Sarah Suehr is one of many people frustrated that she has to pay more for her family’s garbage to be picked up.
Ross township re-signed a new contract with Waste Management that will cost families 30% more for trash up this year, which is about $8 more a month.
Some people think it’s wrong they are being charged more for fewer services.
“I think $8 a month isn’t the biggest deal but I wouldn’t be so upset about it if they weren’t limiting how much garbage they were picking up so they are providing a garbage can and all of your trash has to fit in that garbage can,” said Suehr.
The township manager said there’s no longer unlimited pickup. Each resident will be given one can with an option to purchase another one and he understands why people are frustrated.
“So much like everything else in today’s economy, there is a quite of bit of concern on part of the residents’ hardships for seniors and those on a fixed income,” said Ron Borczyk, the Ross Township Manager.
He was told by Waste Management that inflation, supply chain issues, and a labor shortage are the reasons why the cost went up.
And since Waste Management was the township’s only competitive bid for that contract, there are no other options.
“We work every day to get the best out of our taxpayer dollars we will continue to do that, but it’s become quite a challenge,” said Borczyk.
Waste Management sent this statement, “WM is excited to continue servicing the residents of Ross Township. Through a competitive bidding process, WM was identified by the Township as the lowest, responsible bidder. In February, as part of the new contract, residents will receive a 96-gallon trash cart, which will allow us to provide automated service collection. Like most businesses are experiencing, the cost of providing this service has increased exponentially, especially over the past year. Our hauling team in Ambridge has been servicing this community for more than a decade, and we look forward to continuing to service the township and residents.”
