USPS investigating robbery of mail carrier at gunpoint in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — United States postal inspectors are investigating after a mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Pittsburgh Police, a call came in just around noon this afternoon that a postal worker on their delivery route was robbed at gunpoint at the intersection of Rosedale and Susquehanna Street in the city’s Homewood neighborhood.

City police responded to the scene, but the investigation was turned over to the U.S. Postal Service Police.

Postal service police tell us that a suspect armed with a handgun took some packages from the carrier, but did not physically harm them.

This isn’t the first time a delivery worker has been targeted on this block. In 2022, Zone 5 Police confirmed that a thief jumped inside an Amazon delivery truck as the driver stopped to drop off a package. The thief took off inside the vehicle, and the truck was later found in Wilkinsburg on Ella Street about six minutes away.

The packages were opened and damaged.

According to the Government Accountability Office, robbery is the fastest-growing crime against postal workers. While the data is not yet available for 2024, in 2023 there were 600 reported cases.

The offense is typically considered a federal crime

At this time, USPS has not confirmed if a suspect is in custody but is actively investigating the incident.
