BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A youth football team in Beaver County is now suspended for having an ineligible player on their roster.
The Beaver County Youth Football League suspended the Brighton Township Bears Mighty Mites for the season.
The president of the team told Channel 11 it’s because a player turned 13 years old earlier this month.
It wasn’t until the team sang “happy birthday” to the player on the field that they realized their mistake.
They say the league had approved the team’s paperwork with the player’s birth date on it.
“I get it; we messed up. We are all human. We are all volunteers; we spend a lot of hours out here. So, you know it was an error, not only on our part, but their part too,” Brighton Township Bears board president Kris Kaletz said.
Kaletz said he understands the league’s decision, but feels sorry for the players.
The board of directors of the football league released a statement -- saying:
“This matter is not about any individual child, but rather our responsibility as a league to uphold the rules governing the BCYFL.”
