Police investigate after outgoing Councilwoman Darlene Harris accused of stealing city property

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are investigating outgoing Councilwoman Darlene Harris, who is accused of stealing items from a cabinet outside of Council Chambers.

Harris told our partners at the Trib that the items were given to her personally by Chinese visitors.

Council President Bruce Klaus told the Trib the items are worth thousands of dollars and they don’t belong to her. He said if the items were personal gifts, then Harris violated city ethics by accepting something valued over $250.

Klaus said the items include a large vase, a red and black plate, a gold fan, a large blue purse with artwork and a gold sculpture with claws.

Earlier this month, Harris sued the city, claiming she was illegally fined for failing to file campaign finance reports.
