STUDY: Meat-free burgers are less healthy than real ones

Meat-free burgers might not be much healthier than a regular beef burger.

They often have even more salt than your basic meat burger, according to a new study by the UK group "Action on Salt."

The study compared 157 meat-free products and found that more than a quarter had more salt than it's recommended you get.

Both burger types tested too high in sodium. The meat substitutes contained an average of 0.89 grams of salt per serving, while real beef burgers averaged 0.75 grams per portion.

High-salt diets can increase blood pressure and are linked to strokes and cardiovascular diseases.
